Organized Entertaining

It’s the holidays! Are you entertaining this season? Would you like to be able to enjoy your own party? All it takes is planning.

Here is an entertaining timeline by Scott Roewer, from his chapter “Celebrations in You Home” from the new book, Get Organized Today. Scott’s list will help you stay out of the kitchen and get you enjoying the party with your guests.

Dinner Party Sample Timeline

Four Weeks Out

  • Select your date for your dinner party

Three Weeks Out

  • Plan your food and drink menu for the event
  • Send out the invitations (electronic, phone or mailed)

Two Weeks Out

  • If renting equipment, furniture, make the reservations
  • Brainstorm ideas for decor
  • Select your attire for your event
  • Make your shopping list based on  your menu

One Week Out

  • Review the guest list
  • Phone anyone who has not responded to the RSVP
  • Purchase all food and beverage items on your shopping list
  • Prep any food that you can cook and freeze
  • Purchase any times you need for the decor

Two Days Out

  • Begin decorating your space
  • Clean and de-clutter the space
  • If you hate cleaning, hire a cleaning crew
  • Gather all serving pieces
  • Place a sticky note in each dish designation what will be served in the dish
  • Pair flatware with each dish

One Day Before

  • Fresh flowers should be delivered or create your arrangements
  • Set the table and involve your family in the process if you need help
  • Finish the decorations
  • Meet with bartender, valet or any hired staff and share your expectations for your evening
  • Finalize your attire by gathering all clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc.
  • Because you’ve planned so well, maybe you’ll have time to have your nails done, get a massage or meet a friend for coffee.
