Making Changes

In order to make changes and eliminate clutter in your life you need to make two changes. The two changes are environmental and habits. Most people who want to declutter focus on their environment. This is important and needs to be done, but you also need to change your habits in order to maintain your new, organizing environment. How is this done?

  • Identify your bad clutter habits. Do you buy too many clothes, do you start project that you never finish, do you spend too much time in front of the TV?
  • Now, list one decluttering goal for each bad habit. Shop only once a month for clothes, work on only one project at a time, watch only one hour of TV a day.
  • How do you get there? It’s time to make a plan. Write down how you will change your environment to help you create these new habits.
  • Be conscious of factors that can affect your efforts like depression, mental fatigue or shame.

You are ready to change your clutter habits! You have identified your bad habits, made goals to change each habit and have a plan to change those habits. This is how you will change your environment and keep it that way. As you work to eliminate the stuff you don’t need or want anymore you will also be changing you clutter habits.

Now work your plan.
