Your 6 weeks into your organized new year. Congratulations! I hope you are feeling confident about your organizing skills, because it’s time to work on your desk. This can be a difficult spot to organize, so let’s do it in small doses.
Day 1. Collect all the wayward books on, in and around your desk. Put them away or give them away. If your books don’t have a home, you’ll need to buy a bookcase. Everything needs a home.
Day 2 & 3. Take two days to tackle the top of your desk. Sort all the paper into categories: to file, to do, individual projects, shred, recycling, etc. It will look much better by just making piles, but I want you to move further with each pile: filing, shredding and recycling the papers that you collect will make a big difference. Now all you have left is the stuff that you need to accomplish. The pile may not look so overwhelming, since everything else has been dealt with.
Day 4. Now where is the printer? Can you find it? Clear everything away that has accumulated in, on and around the printer. Set up a printing station with printer paper, specialty paper and ink cartridges so everything is close to where you need it.
Day 5. Almost done for the week! Do you have a bulletin board, white board, or magnetic board? Spend a few moments cleaning off the old stuff and rearrange what is left so you can see it.
Wow! Much better. I bet you feel more productive already.
