Get Organized in 2012 – Week 29

This week is the accessory week. It’s time to get all of your fashion accessories  organized. That means shoes, belts, bags, scarves and jewelry.

Week 29

Day 1. Put on all your shoes. Examine them for wear. Do some shoes need to be repaired? Are some beyond repair? Any that don’t fit or are out of style? Now look at where you store your shoes. Is there enough space? Do you need a shelf or rack? Locate your favorite, most used shoes in the most convenient place for you.

Day 2. Today is belt day. Do you have any that don’t fit or are out of style? It may be time to get rid of that wide belt from the 70s. Do you hang your belts or roll them to store in a drawer? I don’t think there is an ideal storage system for belts. Once you have too many, they become hard to manage, so only keep the belts you use.

Day 3. Gather all your bags. Purses, clutches – big, small, we love them all! Sort by type and size. They will be easier to store by size. Now is the time to be honest with yourself. Which one’s have you not used in the last year. If you have too many, let some go. There are many ways to store bags. You can slip small clutches together into one large bag or a large shoe box to store. One way to store large bags is standing up, like books on a shelf, so they don’t get crushed and so that they are easy to access. You may have to pack them with paper to get them to stand. Another storage possibility is to hang them from their straps from hooks, if you have some wall space in your closet.

Day 4. I am not a scarf person, so I get to take today off, but if you have a collection of scarves, it’s time to evaluate what you have. You might want to sort them by color, so it’s easier to match them to outfits, or you can sort them by types, like wool, silk, cotton. There are several storage options for scarves – folded in a drawer or box, or hanging on a specialty hanger.

Day 5. Lastly, it’s time to organizes your jewelry. If you have a lot of baubles then separate them into types – earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. and sort one type of item at a time. Put aside any broken pieces or earrings that don’t have a partner. Again, where do you store them? Do you have enough space? This may take a while. If you are like me, you’ll end up untangling a few necklaces and maybe cleaning some pieces as well.

Take one day to focus on each type of accessories and by the end of the week you’ll have everything organized and ready to wear. Now you are stylin’.
