The Cluttered Store

We’ve all visited one – A cluttered store. Whether it’s a big-box store or jam-packed jewelry shop or crammed craft store. Why do retailers do this? There is psychology behind it that shows people take out their wallets and spend more in this type of environment.

  • If there is an abundance it gives you the idea that there are deals within the chaos.
  • If there are fewer items you will think the items are more costly. No deals!
  • Seeing so many things in disarray triggers our hunting instinct, which we unknowingly act on.

A cluttered environment may bother you at home, but consider your reaction to a cluttered store on your next visit.

  1. I don’t shop in cluttered stores. I can’t think and I just get irritated. There is one store in particular that friends told me had the best deals. I don’t care. It makes me grouchy just to look in the door.

  2. Good for you Elaine. Consumers need to be proactive and choose the environment they want to shop in.
