Closet Makeover – Part One of a Series

By Basic Organization team member Tracy Wells.

This month I am starting a new series on how to organize your clothes closet. Each month I will give you tips on how to improve the function of your closet. This month we will start with the basics. So if you’re ready to do an overhaul on your closet in 2014 than you will want to read this series.

Each month we will further improve upon the steps we took from the prior month. To get started with this month’s lesson on organizing your closet you will first need to make some simple signs for the clothes you will be trying on. Our goal is for you to try on all of your clothes and only keep the clothes in your closet that fit. You will need some plastic bins and trash bags too. The signs you should make are:

  1. Donation
  2. Consignment
  3. Trash
  4. Alteration
  5. Next Year

As you start trying on your clothes you will be making decisions about where that piece of clothing will go. If it doesn’t fit you it should NOT go back into your closet. You will need to make a decision as to where it will go. Will it be a donation or a consignment? Many consignment stores can resell your clothing if it is of a good quality and a recent fashion style.

Does the clothing have holes or stains? Then it needs to be trashed or used as a rag around the home or car. Can you alter your clothes? Maybe you need to visit a tailor. If it doesn’t fit but you want to keep it you will place that clothing piece in a bin and label the bin for next year. For instance, if today is 1/21/2014 than you will come back on 1/21/2015 to that bin and try those clothes on. If they still don’t fit after one year than you can donate or sell them.

This completes this month’s tip on how to organize your clothes closet. Remember that the first goal was to insure that all the clothes in your closet fit you now. Next month we will go a step further in evaluating each piece of clothing to be sure that it not only fits but that you are asking yourself the right questions as to why you are keeping the clothes in your closet that you haven’t worn.

We will also further our series along with topics such as style, body shapes, and color. Stay tuned for more exciting news and information on organizing your clothes!
